Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Icing Sheets

Will my uploaded picture print exactly the way it looks on my computer?

The way you see your image on your computer may vary slightly in the way our printer prints with the edible colors - there are so many settings and preference for individual computers that an exact match is never possible. Also, images that you copy from an on-line source, or images that you have extracted from Word documents or .PDF files (or other embedded image sources) can use different color palettes which can affect the way the image is printed. Photographs that you scan and save as images files can also print differently depending on how the scanner interprets the colors. Usually scanning original photos is not a problem as long as you don't scan an image that was printed with a printer.

What kind of paper are the images printed on?

The images are printed on an actual layer of icing. The icing sheet has a backing, similar to a sticker that you will remove before applying the image to your cake. The icing sheet is sealed in a plastic bag, and can last up to 6 months before use, without refrigeration.

How do I put the image sheet on the cake?

When you receive your edible icing sheet you will also receive instructions on how to apply the sheet to the cake. If you are purchasing the cake at a bakery, they will be happy to apply the sheet for you. Be sure to provide the instructions for them.

What kind of frosting should I use on my cake?

Icing Sheets adhere differently to different toppings. The sheet requires moisture to adhere. When using a fondant or other dry icings, you must dampen the surface you are applying the sheet to. With store bought cakes or buttercreams you should apply the image when the frosting is freshly applied, if not they can crust or dry and you must dampen the frosting prior to applying the sheet. For best results, use a white or light colored frosting where the sheets are to be placed - this will ensure that the image colors are not washed out by a darker frosting color.

When should I apply the image sheet to my cake?

Depending on how wet your frosting is, the image will begin to fade with too much moisture. If you are concerned about fading, place the sheet on the cake within an hour of the event. If you are using a cake bought at a bakery with the harder frosting, the image can be placed on at your convenience, but not more than 48 hours prior to the event.

Is the image sheet safe to eat?

Completely. The edible icing sheet and edible inks use FDA approved ingredients. Once the sheet is applied to the cake, it will bond with the frosting and can be easily cut with a knife as long as the frosting is dampened enough.

How soon can I receive my image sheet?

We offer two delivery options. Standard orders will be processed within 3 business days and require an additional 1-5 days for delivery, depending on your location. Rush orders will be processed immediately and you will receive your order by the third business day. Please remember to allow extra time for the delivery of your image. If Rush delivery by the third business day is not possible, depending on your location, Icing Images will contact you to discuss options.

Question about creating my image or design

I see we have to use these two features, iPrint and iDesigns, to create our image. Are they easy to use?

Yes, iPrint and iDesigns are both simple step-by-step processes that you cannot mess up. As long as you follow each step and read each tip within each step you will be fine. Also there is a Tutorial that will help you understand each step before you begin. Just take your time and read each instruction.

What will iPrint allow me to do?

iPrint will allow you to upload up to 5 images, of which you can select one or more regions from any of the images to print on the same template sheet. For example a team photo of your child's sports team will allow you to select each child to appear on a circle for making cupcakes or cookies. Also, for full size prints, you can rotate, add text, add frames, select mats, etc. You are in complete control of the final image. Consult the easy to follow tutorial for complete instructions.

What is iDesigns?

iDesigns are repeatable patterns that match up at each end to create a full size printed sheet of any pattern you like. You can select from over 1000 patterns, control the density, orientation, and even add "cut lines" which are guides for cutting should you need each pattern in a strip that will match from end to end. There are even full-page sports themes, for example a soccer field that you can print that can serve as the background for adding edible players or decorations on top. Consult the easy to follow tutorial for complete instructions on using iDesigns.

What if my image won't upload because a message says that it is too large?

First, avoid taking digital photos with the highest resolution. You can load your image in a photo-shop type application which will allow you to resize your image to a smaller file size. Try compressing it if it is a .jpg, or crop it to print just the area you want to print. The 2 meg limit is imposed to keep unnecessarily large files from taking up too much storage space on our web server, and besides images at such a high resolution are not necessary. They take forever to upload and download.

How can I put text on the small circles?

Currently iPrint only allows text on the full sheets or 8" circle. You can add text by first loading your image into a paintshop-type application, applying the text, then upload the image into iPrint. Text on small circles will be available in the future.

Can I just email you a picture?

Icing Images processes its image orders using our online ordering system. Images sent by mail may not be noticed or processed in time, unless you have prearranged a special order (for example a very large repetitive order) with us.

I see my picture on the iPrint page, but it won't show up on the order form, why?

The last step on the iPrint page has a button labeled "Return To Order Form". You must click this to save your image. You can make as many changes as you like, but remember to return to the order form using this button, NOT the "On-Line Order Form" left menu item.
